To the best of my knowledge suckers (the new shoots forming out of nodes which are usually pruned and thrown away) can be rooted and grown to maturity at anytime during a grow cycle. However, I have only done this with indeterminate varieties, determinate varieties may not do so well when they are in the later fruiting stages, but that is just my guess.
